Studies of cannabis genetics link this trait to the enzymes THCA synthase and CBDA synthase, which compete for the same precursor compound, CBGA. A plant inheriting functional versions of only one enzyme leans strongly toward that cannabinoid. Total quantity, by contrast, depends on many genes as well as growing conditions.
